Junior Championship: Pride of place this week goes to our Junior Team who were crowned County Champions on Sunday last when they defeated Emmet Og Killoe in the final played in Pearse Park. In a tense and exciting encounter, the Mostrim men started strong and built up an early lead which they brought into the half time break. As was to be expected, Killoe came out strong in the second half and gradually began to narrow the margin. As the game entered injury time just 4 points separated the sides and Killoe tagged on two more points to cut the gap to just two. It appeared there wouldn't be time for any more drama with the allocated two minutes of injury time already played but bizarrely the game continued for a further 3 minutes at the end of which Killoe rattled the crossbar while in search of that all-important goal. Finally the whistle was blown much to the relief of players, officials and the sizable Mostrim crowd in attendance. Huge credit goes to this panel of players who had to overcome much adversity along the way and it was great to see some of the future stars of the club mixing so ably with some of the club's most experienced players. It certainly bodes well for the future. Final score in the final Mostrim 1-10 Emmet Og Killoe 0-11. Team: John Gilchrist, John Gaffney, Barry Noonan, Shane Sheridan, Daniel Connell, Padraic Jones, John Mulhern, Jack Lynn, Sean Noonan, John Coyle, John Cullen, Aidan Sheridan, John Skelly, Ray Hussey, Andy Kelly. Well done to all the lads who have trained and worked hard throughout the season and to the management team of Tony Kelly, John Coyle, Bernie Connell and Tony Garvey who worked tirelessly with the team throughout the year.

Hopefully a big Mostrim crowd will be in attendance to cheer the lads on against a strong Killoe outfit. Best of luck lads.

Senior League: On Friday night last our senior team travelled to Clonee to take on Killoe in Round 8 of the All County Football League Division 1. We started the game well creating plenty of chances but as has been the chance for much of the season we failed to convert the majority of these chances and ended up trailing at the break on a scoreline of Killoe 1-4 Mostrim 0-1. Killoe started the second half strongly with a second goal which effectively ended the game as a contest and although we managed 6 second half consolation scores, Killoe found the net twice more to seal a 4-11 to 0-7 win. Team; Ciaran Garvey, Cathal Smith, Sean Monaghan, Aaron Gallagher, Damien Moran, Gerard Smith, Ciaran Gallagher, Fintan Coyle, Martin Coyle, Darren Bloomer, John Cullen, Luke Kelly, Brian Farrell (0-4, 0-2 from frees), Benny Dempsey, Michael Hussey. Wednesday 19th August

Senior League: Our seniors were back in league action last Friday night when they hosted Dromard in Devine Park. Wednesday 12th August

Senior Championship: Having fallen to heavy defeats against Killoe and Clonguish in their previous two games, not much was expected of our seniors when they took on 2013 championship winners Longford Slashers last Saturday night in Ballymahon. Our lads hadn't read the script however nor had they passed any heed on the 1/16 favourites tag placed on Slashers as we raced into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead through points from Alan O Hara and 3 from Cillian Lynn. Slashers managed to find a foothold in the game and narrowed the gap back to just one before Brian Farrell put us two ahead again with just a few minutes to go in the first half. Slashers finished the half strong however and 3 quick points saw them lead 0-6 to 0-5 at the break. Slashers got the first score of the second half to open up a two point lead but minutes later Brian Farrell found the back of the net and quickly followed up with a point to leave us leading 1-6 to 0-7. A 20 minute period followed during which neither team managed to score and huge credit must go to our backs who defended heroically and forced Slashers into kicking wide after wide. We had chances to extend the lead on the counter but couldn't get the decisive score we craved to put further daylight between ourselves and our opponents. As they had done in the first half, Slashers finished the second half strongly scoring one point from play and one from a free to level the game. That pointed free was to be the last score of the game and while a draw might be considered a good result against this strong and experienced Slashers side, we were desperately unlucky not to clinch the win we needed to book a place in the play-offs for the Quarter Finals. We now face a relegation battle and have been drawn to play the losers of Killoe/Ballymahon in the relegation semi-final. Team on duty versus Slashers: Terry Casey, Cathal Smith, Sean Monaghan, Aaron Gallagher, Damien Moran, Gerard Smith, Ciaran Gallagher, Martin Coyle, Shane Kiernan, Luke Kelly, Sean Noone, Cillian Lynn(0-3), Brian Farrell (1-2), Fintan Coyle, Alan O Hara(0-1). Subs: Michael Hussey for Sean Noone (injured), John Mulhern for Gerard Smith (blood-sub), Darragh Doherty for Alan O Hara.

Wednesday 29th July

Senior Championship: Our Seniors played Clonguish in Round 2 of the Championship last Saturday in Pairc na nGael Dromard. Having started brightly and taken a 0-1 to 0-0 lead, Clonguish gradually played themselves into the game and by half time had built up a 0-8 to 0-4 point lead. We needed to start the second half strongly and despite getting the first score of the half, it wasn't long before Clonguish asserted their superiority on the contest with two quick goals to put the game beyond us. Final score: Clonguish 2-15 Mostrim 0-6. Team: Ciaran Garvey, Cathal Smith, Sean Monaghan, Aaron Gallagher, Damien Moran, Martin Coyle, Sean Noone, Gerard Smith (0-1), Seamus Hannon, Luke Kelly, Cillian Lynn, Alan O Hara (0-1), Michael Hussey, Brian Farrel (0-4, 3 frees), Shane Kiernan. Subs: Michael Kenny for Michael Hussey, Ciaran Gallgher for Luke Kelly, Darren Bloomer for Alan O Hara, Michael O Hara for Cillian Lynn. We have been drawn to play Longford Slashers in Round 3 of the Championship next weekend. Meanwhile we are due to play Carrickedmond in the Senior League at 8pm in Ardagh on Friday night.

Junior Championship: Our Junior team travelled to take on Dromard on Sunday morning in the First Round of the Junior Championship. Played in wet and windy conditions, a determined and spirited effort saw us come away from Pairc na nGael with a share of the spoils. Final score:  Mostrim 2-9 Dromard 3-6.

U-16s: Our juveniles amalgamated with Clonbroney played Carrick Sarsfields in the Division 2 Cup Final on Thursday last in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. A fantastic display saw the lads clinch a one point win. Final score: Wolfe Tones Og/Clonbroney 4-5 Carrick Sarsfields 3-7. Well done lads super stuff! We are due to play the same opposition in Round 1 of the Juvenile B Championship tomorrow, Thursday 30th July at 7.30pm in Devine Park. Best of luck lads.

Ladies Club: Well done to the Senior Ladies who defeated Dromard in the Intermediate Championship on Sunday and in doing so booked their place in the Championship Final. Played in atrocious conditions at Pairc na nGael Dromard, the girls produced a fanstatic display to come away with a 5 point win. Final score: Mostrim Ladies 2-4 Dromard 0-5. Meanwhile the Ladies Club are hosting a Summer BBQ Night in the Park House Hotel on Sunday 2nd August. There will be live music and DJ on the night and food will be served in the garden area. Wednesday 22nd July

Senior Championship: Hard luck to our senior footballers who were defeated by Emmet Og Killoe in Round 1 of the Longford Senior Football Championship on Friday evening last in Maguire Park Ballinalee. Killoe started the game well and quickly established a 2 point lead but our lads soon got a foothold in the game through a pointed free from Brian Farrell. The sides then exchanged scores before Killoe kicked a couple of unanswered points to move into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead. Shane Kiernan then pointed for Mostrim before two Killoe scores left them leading the game by 0-7 to 0-3. A terrific move from the Mostrim men then opened up the Killoe defence with Cillian Lynn breaking through and firing over the bar to leave just a goal between the sides before an injury time Killoe score left them leading the contest by 4 points at half time. Killoe 0-8 Mostrim 0-4. Aided by a slight wind advantage in the second half, the Mostrim men started strongly and dominated the opening exchanges of the half but unfortunately lacked a clinical edge in kicking 3 wides in a row before Killoe got the scoreboard ticking again through a good Sean McCormack score. With 10 minutes played in the second half disaster struck with Killoe scoring 1-1 inside a minute to put the game to bed. Our lads fought hard to try and get back into contention but the reigning champions showed their experience by latching on a few more scores to see the game out and get the defence of their crown off to a good start. Final score Emmet Og Killoe 1-15 Mostrim 0-6. Team: Ciaran Garvey, Cathal Smith, Sean Monaghan, Aaron Gallagher, Damien Moran, Martin Coyle, Michael Kenny, Seamus Hannon, Niall Quinn, Luke Kelly, Cillian Lynn (0-2), Alan O Hara, Gerard Smith, Brian Farrell (0-3, 0-2 from frees), Shane Kiernan (0-1). Subs: Michael Hussey for Niall Quinn (injured), Ciaran Gallagher for Michael Kenny. Wednesday 15th July

Senior Championship: The Longford Senior Football Championship kicks into action this weekend and our lads have the daunting task of taking on reigning champions Emmet Og Killoe in the first round to be played on Friday night at 7.45pm in Maguire Park Ballinalee. A big crowd is expected at the game and we are hoping a large local contingent will make the short drive to support the lads as they aim to get their championship campaign off to a good start. The lads have put in a huge effort all year preparing for championship and deserve the support of not only all club members but also that of the whole town. On Sunday evening Devine Park will host the last 2 first round games of the weekend as well as the draw for the second round. At 5.15pm Abbeylara take on Ballymahon while at 6.45pm Gerry Lynn's St.Columba's side will face Longford Slashers in a game which sees last year's beaten finalists taking on the 2013 champions. The club will be asking for volunteers to make themselves available for stewarding and selling of Lotto tickets at the games on Sunday evening.

Longford Minors: Hard luck to Michael, Darragh, Sean and all involved with the Longford Minors who were beaten by Kildare in the Leinster Minor Final in Croke Park on Sunday. It was a great achievement to get to the final having overcome strong opposition along the way and although on the day Kildare seemed to overpower the Longford lads we have no doubt that the lads will bounce back and will still be a major force to be reckoned with when taking on the Ulster winners either Derry or Cavan in the All Ireland Quarter Final. A huge Edgeworthstown crowd headed to the capital for the game and all had a great day out despite not getting the result we all hoped for.

Longford Seniors: Hard luck also to Brian and the Longford Seniors who were heavily defeated by Kildare in Round 3A of the All Ireland Qualifiers in Cusack Park Mullingar on Saturday evening last.

There was no winner of last week's Lotto Jackpot. Numbers drawn were 2, 5, 19 and 25. €25 winners were Ciaran Tighe, Jim Goonery, Pat Hayes and Alan Crossan. Team 2 on duty this weekend-Tony Gaffney, Tony Garvey and Tom Victory.

Longford Seniors: Well done to Brian Farrell and the Longford Senior Footballers who recorded a terrific 2-12 to 1-12 win over Clare in Round 2A of the All-Ireland Senior Football Qualifiers in Ennis on Saturday evening last. The win booked them a place in the draw for Round 3 which took place on Monday morning (draw not known at time of submission of these notes) with the game due to be played this Saturday. Check elsewhere for details of opposition, venue, date and time.

Leinster Minor Final: Best wishes to Michael Kenny, Darragh Doherty, Sean Noonan and all involved with the Longford Minor team who take on Kildare in the Leinster Minor Final this Sunday at 12.00 in Croke Park. It is a tremendous achievement for this team to have reached the final having overcome Wicklow, Carlow and Meath already and they will be quietly confident that they can spring another surprise and overcome a fancied Kildare outfit who defeated Dublin in the other semi final. A large local contingent are expected to make the journey to the capital on Sunday to support the Longford lads and let's hope we will have something to celebrate by the time our neighbours Westmeath take on Dublin in the Senior Final at 2.00. Best of luck lads. The club have a limited supply of tickets available and anyone interested in buying tickets should contact Pauline Farrell or any committee member.

Breakfast Morning: Well done to the Tidy Towns and Christmas Lights Committees who joined forces to run a very successful 'Breakfast Morning' Fundraiser on Sunday morning. All who supported the event were treated to an extremely tasty breakfast with all the trimmings!

Wednesday 1st July

Reserve League Final: Pride of place this week goes to our Reserve 3 team who defeated Grattans in the Reserve League Final played on Friday night in Leo Casey Park Ballymahon. The Mostrim men played some fantastic football throughout this contest and in the end claimed a 6 point win. Final score Mostrim 0-17 Grattans 1-8. Hard luck to the gallant Grattans side who pushed us all the way and who had also defeated us earlier in the competition. Team on duty: John Gilchrist, Paddy Gallagher, Brian Smith, John Skelly (captain), Padraic Jones, Shane Sheridan, Seamus Hannon, John Coyle, Barry Noonan, John Cullen, Terry Casey, Benny Dempsey, Andy Kelly, Subs: Mark Cullen, Ray Hussey, John Mulhern, Jack Lynn, John Briody, Cathal Victory, Daniel Connell, Paul Connell (captain). Missing on the day but also part of the team were Barney McGlynn, Padraig O Farrell, Sean Noonan, Darragh Doherty, Paddy Smith. Well done to Tony Kelly, John Coyle, Bernie Connell and Tony Garvey who lead this side to victory and to all the players who played their part at varying stages throughout the year.

Longford Minors: Huge congratulations to Michael Kenny (management), to Darragh Doherty and Sean Noonan and to all involved with the County Minor Team who defeated Meath in the semi-final of the Leinster Minor Championship last Saturday in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. This well-drilled, well-organised and hard-working Longford side dominated the contest from start to finish and were full value for the 4 point win. Final score: Longford 1-9 Meath 0-8. The Longford lads will now face Kildare in the Leinster Final at 12.00 on Sunday 12th July after Kildare defeated Dublin in the other semi-final. It is a tremendous achievement for Longford to reach another Leinster Minor Final following on from the success of the 2010 team in which Cillian Lynn stared and it is wonderful to have 2 players as well as a member of the management team representing the Mostrim club in Croke Park on Leinster Final day. Well done lads.

Longford Seniors: Best of luck to Brian Farrell and the Longford seniors who take on Clare in Round 2A of the All-Ireland Football Qualifiers this Saturday at 5pm in Ennis.

McGovern Cup: On Sunday last, Mostrim GAA Club welcomed Clara of Co. Offaly and Ballinagh of Co. Cavan to Devine Park to compete for the McGovern Cup. Unfortunately Kinnegad who were due to take part pulled out at the last minute which reduced the competition to 3 teams. An open draw was held to decide who would play first and the draw pitted the two travelling teams against each other. Ballinagh and Clara served up a highly entertaining encounter and when referee Fergal Kelly blew the final whistle the teams were level on a scoreline of Ballinagh 1-8, Clara 2-5. The second game saw the Mostrim men taking on Clara. After a tight first half which saw the sides level at 3 points each, some wastefulness in front of goal was to eventually lead to Mostrim's downfall as the Clara men were more clinical in pushing on to a 0-8 to o-4 win. The final game was the meeting of Mostrim and Ballinagh. Having shaken off the cobwebs in the first game, the men in red and green put on an excellent display against the lads from Cavan and powered to a 2-13 to 1-4 win. Those results meant Clara finished top of the group thus clinching the McGovern Cup with Mostrim finishing second and Ballinagh in third. The club would like to extend a warm word of thanks to both travelling teams for their participation in the competition and wish them the best of luck in their respective county championships. Well done to Clara who lifted the McGovern Cup. Thanks also to the Park House Hotel Edgeworthstown who served up a lovely meal on Sunday afternoon when the competition had come to its conclusion.

Ladies Club: As part of their participation in the Irish Sun's 'Jerseys for Clubs' promotion, the Mostrim Ladies Club hosted a Meet & Greet/Questions & Answers session with 3 time All-Ireland winning Tyrone manager Mickey Harte last Monday 22nd June in the pitch. It was a fantastic honour for the Ladies Club and Mostrim GAA as a whole to welcome one of the greatest football managers of the modern era to Devine Park and we hope everyone who attended enjoyed the evening.
